My Experience Building Near Griffin’s Reach – Worth the Struggle?

When I first started playing Dune: Awakening, I was overwhelmed by the scale of the world and the brutal pace of survival. After testing the waters near Aren’s Refuge, I decided to try something bolder: claiming a spot near Griffin’s Reach Trading Post. Let me tell you — it was one of the most challenging yet rewarding decisions I made in the early game.

This area is, without a doubt, one of the most desirable locations for a base in the Hagga Basin. And like all desirable things in Dune: Awakening, it comes at a cost.

The Heart of Early Game Activity

Griffin’s Reach isn’t just a trading post — it’s the first major NPC hub that most players will encounter, and it serves as a critical anchor point for:

  • Main and side quests
  • Faction introductions
  • Resource exchanges
  • PvP ambushes (more on that later...)

If your base is located nearby, you gain a major efficiency advantage. You don’t need to travel far to turn in quests, buy water, or interact with other players. In my first playthrough, I saved tons of time and gained a noticeable level/gear lead just by optimizing my quest routes from this base.

Fast Progression, If You Can Secure It

What makes building near Griffin’s Reach so appealing — and so competitive — is the access to early-game resources. Right outside the trading post are nodes for gathering essential materials like water, scrap metal, fiber plants, and low-tier spice veins. Combine that with fast access to mission-givers and crafting NPCs, and you're looking at a spot that accelerates your growth dramatically.

When I had my base here, I was producing gear and upgrades far faster than when I was in Aren’s Refuge. I had water tanks full, a stash of scrap, and more than a few valuable schematics from nearby POIs.

The Downsides: Competition and PvP Threat

But let me be honest — building near Griffin’s Reach isn’t for everyone.

First, the available building spots are extremely limited. Most of the terrain is either too rough, too sandy, or already claimed within the first couple hours of a server wipe or fresh launch. I had to log in during an off-peak hour and camp a spot for almost an hour before a plot finally opened up.

Second, because this area is a major hub, PvP activity is higher than almost anywhere else in the early game. If you’re a solo player or not well-equipped, expect to get raided — hard. I was attacked multiple times during my stay here, and even with a small team, we lost some storage and materials in the process.

But if you're willing to accept the risk and can fortify your base properly, the rewards far outweigh the losses.

Pro Tips for Surviving Near Griffin’s Reach

  • Use terrain smartly: Build behind rock formations or elevation to hide your structures and reduce visibility.
  • Build light and mobile: Don't store everything in one place — spread your loot between different storage units and stash your best gear elsewhere.
